Samuel Wilson, also known as Uncle Sam, was a meat packer from Troy, New York who is believed to be the inspiration for the American symbol Uncle Sam. Wilson supplied barrels of beef to American soldiers during the War of 1812, and the barrels were stamped with the initials "U.S." for United States. Soldiers began referring to the food as being supplied by Uncle Sam, and the nickname stuck. The image of Uncle Sam as a tall, white-bearded man wearing a top hat and red, white, and blue clothing became a widely recognized symbol of America. Samuel Wilson died in 1854, but his legacy lives on as one of the most enduring symbols of American patriotism.
